Seems like it was a Helluva war in your day from what I've heard, I don't blame you.
Yeah, that's the one. You already know I was a paratrooper and a medic. My company made four combat jumps and I was there for all of them — it was a big deal then, but I bet that seems really silly in your day.
Not really. Helljumpers drop in pods. We're protected by thick metal plating. [ Not invulnerable, but protected. ] No sense of height until you're near planet's surface.
Dropping without pod would be fucking terrifying.
[ Maine isn't just saying that, either. He hates heights. ]
( funny, but gene sees it as just the opposite. there's a reason he didn't join the navy, because lord help him on a submarine. )
Guess it boils down to what a fella can stand, huh?
Don't think I'd've done too well in a tight spot like that, no way of orienting yourself on the outside world. To be honest, even the worst drops we did I still remember everything so clearly — more exhilarated than scared. Feel like I'd lose some of that if I was just falling in anticipation.
( he didn't have time to be afraid. gela'd been a goddamn disaster, men drownin' in the surf because the plane dropped 'em way off course, an' normandy had been its own special sort'a hell, but. not once during any drop did was he so focused on what to come that he didn't spare a look heavenward, an' marvel. )
[ That's something Maine has never thought of. Then again, he's never had a problem with tight spaces. Would've been in trouble if he did. It's not like his armor's helmet is roomy, even with the oversized visor. ]
Pods have a few windows. Narrow. Enough to see possible threats. Can't risk coming out blind, running into enemy.
[ So maybe not entirely unbearable for Gene. Maybe. ]

( the depression years, and then the war years. how fun??? )

[ Not something that bothers him, but worth saying. He can't give a civilian perspective on most things. ]
Second World War, right?
