[ gene raises a disturbing but valid point - god knows irwin's brief time in combat had shown him the terrible things men were capable of doing to each other at great length. killing another without touching them, through the somewhat impersonal act of smashing the lantern embodying their soul - that pales in comparison, and it's very well likely that someone here might be capable of such a thing. ]
We will. Hopefully people are going to be cautious now that everyone knows breaking them's enough to kill you.
[ it's a bizarre thought, to have something outside of one's body act as an extension of it, let alone something so fragile. ]
( whole lotta things, really. but folks have a short attention span, an' brevity is the soul of necessity. )
Inquire after any medicines we can ask for from the future. Stress the clinic as a haven to those in need. Offer our services on any jaunts folks're like to take out into the woods. Maybe see if anybody wants to learn the trade.
( he's confident enough in his skills he can teach, an' the fact that wade's got some doctorin' experience ought to count for somethin'. they can manage. more folk that know how to tend wounds the better. )
I was thinking the same. We could make sure everyone at least knows basic field medicine. How to stabilize a broken bone until they get to us, that sort of thing. I'll set it up on the network. Regroup in 15?
[ a place to stay. he doesn't trust anyone enough in the inn to be willing to live with them. and he has bad nights. he's gotten better at controlling himself, but he's been unsteady.
he's not going to wake up screaming around strangers.
(or screaming for bruce. the asylum is raw. the wound hasn't closed yet.) ]
Just thinking about something. Where are you sleeping these days?
[ as if he wasn't keeping track of you. too late eugene, ceiling bat is watching you. ]
Couple different places. Clinic in the Church some days, an' I'm in room 304. Otherwise I'm in a tent out near the bonfire.
( like dick, he ain't one to sleep around strangers. the boys of love company would've understood, but. ain't a soul here he'd commit that part of himself to. )
( if ever a statement could break his heart. dick has that quiet intensity to him that speaks to wounds that run deep an' heal bad. gene don't consider himself that bad-off from the war. he's seen things he carries, an' he's done things what stain the soul, but. he don't hurt like some of the men he's known.
all he can do is nod. )
Be happy to help, I can fumble my way around puttin' together a half-decent cabin, though I wouldn't be much help with plumbin' or 'lectric. How big were you thinkin'?
We'll need to cut down a few trees. I guess we could do round-log, we ain't got any of the equipment to cut boards without a real hassle unless somebody's got an ability for it. An' we won't be able to do it immediately, neither, the wood'll have to dry some first so it don't shrink or shift. Unless we can find some that've come over in a storm — you don't want anythin' that fell on account of bein' dead.
( he's doing the calculations in his head. the buildin' won't take near as long as the wood seasoning, but it's still a solid month of work. )
Floor'll be the hardest part, but we might be able to use salvage boards for that. Shouldn't need to be bigger than ten-by-ten. Windows?
( he's nearby, so it ain't so much of a jaunt for him. dick'll find him outside the church. smoking, because although he's tryin' to cut back he still needs the occasional dose of nicotine. when he sees dick, he puts the end out with his fingers and tucks the half-smoked dart away. )
Hey. We'll be out there for a few hours, you got the supplies for it? Forgot to ask.
( if he had to hedge a guess, gene'd figure ain't a one of 'em that's sleepin' well, or long, or dreamlessly. death ain't bloodless, an' he has his doubts about whether or not any one of 'em here died from somethin' as peaceable as a heart attack in their sleep. so though dick's tiredness is noted, it don't warrant comment. gene just gives him a thoughtful look, a faint furrow to his brow that maybe one day would'a been a frown line if he'd lived that long. )
All righty. Well, it's your place. Why don't you go on an' lead the way? You got an area scoped out yet?
Yeah. It’s not that far. [ he’d looked and the trees seemed sturdy.
he leads by walking a little ahead. quietly and purposely into the woods. he doesn’t need the lantern to show him the way but holds it up in front anyway. ]
Have you done much exploring? [ gene’s probably been busy with the clinic. ]
( eerie, in an' of itself. there's supposed to have been other folks that were here first, but five said that when the resets happen everythin' goes back to. how it was. how it'd been since the beginnin'.
which means they oughta be careful, because this whole damn city could be like nothin' else so much as a chessboard. one wrong step, an' they're lookin' at eternal limbo. )
Seems like that's a consequence of the resets to me. Don't rightly know how I feel about that.
( he says that speculatively rather than correctively. his opinions are his own, ain't no need to foist them on others. dick doesn't have to like it, that's his business. )
This is already somethin' of a second chance. Who are we to argue for more time than we've been given anyhow? I think I'd rather look at this as a gift, an' every breath as a blessing.
but it chokes off his anger. it dissipates. he's left feeling miserable and small. gene came from a war. he's probably not eager to go back. if going back is a possibility.
